Bolton Hospice has an 18 bed in-patient unit, along with other free support services which offer day therapy, drop-in sessions, out patient clinics and a Hospice at Home service. It also provides palliative care for local people facing cancer and other incurable, life limiting illnesses. The Hospice applied to the Trust for assistance in acquiring a lateral tilt mattress which they had successfully trialled in the previous two months.
The mattress allowed for lateral rotation therapy, patients being automatically tilted from side to side every twenty minutes to alleviate pressure on the body, provide a higher degree of comfort, aid prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, and lessen the build-up of heat and moisture on the patients’ skin.
The cost of the mattress was £3000 and the Hospice applied for grant assistance of £1,500 which the Trustees were happy to award.
